For the love of Lady's Finger

Lady’s Finger is the common name of what is called “Okra” here in hometown; a somewhat ordinary vegetable that is being underestimated by many can do wonders. A widespread of diseases plague the news everyday— reports from the TV, information from friends, rumor from officemates, and everywhere. Maybe the reason for the diseases is just diet that a person is following. There are others, who are into a vegetable or a white meat diet, or a fish diet—whatever food preference you may have is always worth to have a second look on the food that you take and those you ignore.

There is this one guy who has been suffering from constipation for more than twenty years now and just recently he was found to be afflicted with acid reflux. But he discovered one thing—the treatment is simply okra or lady’s finger.

Within the span of two months and ever since, this guy never took any medication again after he started eating okra. Just six pieces of okra everyday, and now his bowel movement is regular, his blood sugar dropped from 135 to 98, and his cholesterol and acid reflux are all under control.

Even the former President of the Philippines, Corazon C. Aquino, was not exempted from diseases and was recently found out to have colon cancer. The news shocked the whole country and the consciousness of having a healthy lifestyle immediately became everybody’s concern. Indeed cancer has no preference whether what social status you belong to.

Some okra facts were verified. Okra is full of valuable nutrients, half of which is soluble fiber in the form of gums and pectins. This soluble fiber helps to lower the serum cholesterol, thus reducing the heart disease risk. The other half is the opposite which is insoluble fiber which keeps the intestinal tract healthy, thus decreasing the risk of cancer, especially the cancer of the colon rectal.

Almost 10% of the recommended levels of folic acid and vitamin B6 are also found in a half cup of cooked okra. Always remember these few points about okra:

1. The fiber found in okra helps to alleviate blood sugar as it limits the rate where the sugar is absorbed from the intestinal tract.

2. Different alternative health practitioners believe all diseases begin in the colon. The fibers found in okra, and its water helps prevent constipation. Fiber in general is helpful for this but okra is one of the best, along with the ground flax seed and psyllium.

Unlike harsh wheat bran, which can irritate or injure the intestinal tract, okra's mucilage soothes, and okra assists in the elimination more comfortably by the slippery characteristic many people dislike.

In other words, this very valuable vegetable not only binds excess cholesterol and toxins (in bile acids) which cause plenty of health problems, but also assures the easy passage from the body.

This okra is non-toxic, non-addictive, has no unfavorable side effects, is full of nutrients, and is so affordable to most people. And most of all it is very, very cheap you can even plant it in your own little space without much maintenance—in less than a month you can have the Lady’s Finger at your fingertips.

Our Little House in the Suburbs

We just transferred to our new house here in Laguna, away from the pollution of the big city of Metro Manila. And even if we do not own our new abode, it is certainly a nice and refreshing feeling of all of us being together under one roof that is, including the 2 smallest members of the house. Of course, that will be Peachy, the dog and Matee, the cat, I am referring to.

We are getting the hang of our new house; every corner seems to fit our lifestyle. Even the surrounding garden outside is also revitalizing. We were like little kids running around the yard and the small garden. I really admire nowadays the beauty of the earth because of this small garden that we have, and I reflect now that we should really do something about Mother Earth.

In our own special way, we may start by segregating our trash. To tell you honestly, we do not segregate our trash before. But when we transferred here in our new house, we came to learn more about segregating the biodegradable to non-biodegradable—the leftover food we put in a small trash bag, and the bottles, papers and other materials we put in another trash bag. We do the trash segregation everyday, so as not to attract the cockroaches and rats in breeding in our area. Even the kids learned about segregating trash; well, they came to learn it also in their own school in the past years or so, so I think this is not such a new thing for them at all.

I think this is a good procedure to follow, and come to think of it, even if it is just a small deed, at least we are doing something for Mother Earth in our own small, special way. What do you think?

Strange Moonlight Over Los Banos

This photos was taken by Mauren, my daughter during the full moon April 21, 2008 at Los Banos Laguna. There’s a mysterious and strange image shown after a few shots. What was the usual expected round shape of the full moon appears a weird “optical” illusion of an image evocative of some peculiar things about to transpire.

Full moon is believed to be mysterious since time on. Ceremonies traditional or otherwise were marked in the calendar falling under the rise of the Full Moon—Philippine Weddings arranged during this lunar cycle are believed to be prosperous and abounding with wealth.

On the contrary, some believed that most people are likely to become temperament, eccentric, and out of the usual during this lunar event as the word “lunacy” got its meaning. There is a scientific proof to that. Lunar activity especially full moon affects the earth’s gravity thus the High and Low tide of the seas. The Human body is composed of 80% water that’s why during full moon human body’s water got affected too.

Also during this phase wherein the moon is fully illuminated by the sun, fishes on the ocean are scarce. Fisherman find it hard to catch fish as fishes are viciously attracted by light—having it in full abundance through the sea makes the fishes go wild scattering the huge blue waters enjoying the moonlight.

Endless myths are associated by this nearest star on our planet—monsters, goblins, vampires, werewolves, aswang, kapre and a whole lot of folklore monsters that our grandparents used to tell us after dinner where the atmosphere is conducive to ghost story telling while huddling close together in a semi-lit terrace beside the rustling leaves of a big acacia tree.

I only got one happy memory during full moon—I remember playing hide and seek when I was young under the moonlight, a perfect time to run around making the half dark night your ally in hiding. I’m glad I got to enjoy playing under the moonlight when I was young, as the children of this generation have only computer games to their compensation of enjoyment.

How Brian Gorell gave blogging a new meaning

With the recent ruckus going on in the blogosphere about the blog of Brian Gorell, people especially in this part of the world (Philippines) are going frantic—some are sympathetic others are stupefied and horrified by the way things are going. As Brian unfolds events by events his expose on the lifestyle of the so-called rich and famous of the Manila Socialite, more dirty laundry are being wash in full view of the cyber community.

To those who didn’t know, Brian Gorell is an Australian Gay who made the recent newscast via his infamous relationship with the Manila socialite DJ Montano who in turn duped him of his life’s savings to the tune of $70,000. It is just another sobbing sick story of a gay relationship that went haywire; as the nation gripped in crisis over the shortage of rice and fuel price increase, Brian and DJ love and hate story is just another brick in the wall—but not this time.

You see, Brian’s blog talks about DJ and the rest of the Gucci Gang, demystifying the otherwise dream of many Filipinos imitating the life of the rich and famous. Brian’s blog talks about cocaine addiction in the “alta sosyedad” being perpetrated by those people with silver spoon on their ass…I mean mouth. It also talks about how those dirty scoundrels in the personification of politicians and their families amass wealth and influenced people in the Government.

What does make Brian’s blog so famous? Well one thing is certain, the element of a telenovela is clearly present—the blow by blow account of how he swab, wash, rinse, and scrub dirty laundries in full bubbly soapy tub with the help of national TV news via the interviews of local media.

I too had once in my life a brush on those people belonging to the higher society—and I tell you that is the most dangerous and disgusting part of my life, the deception, lies upon lies, back stabbing, drug addiction, sexual marauding that you would think only in of movies can happen is incarnated in the flesh of those rich people.

Many people can identify and sympathizes with Brian being an HIV infected person; he caught the attention as many relates to his revelations. People he mentioned in his blog are so ubiquitous in the lifestyle pages of every broadsheet and fashion magazine of this God-forsaken land. Their faces splashed on every page including top corporate adverts and entertainment updates; they also belong to the clan of politicians and tycoons of this country—as such they are being the subject of envy and admiration among youth (such a sick thing to revere).

Lastly Brian’s blog is an eye opener to many. Blogging in this day and age reached a level where journalism hasn’t drifted on yet—at least not now. Blogging proves it has power and not just ordinary power it stirs, staunch, and give voice to those otherwise being subdued and muffled by the system.

Are Filipinos Agoraphobic? Take a look behind their walls.

Looking around and observing people around nowadays will definitely give you a simple yet alarming supposition: Anxiety disorder. With the present world condition and local disarray Filipinos literally having a hard time sleeping at night and sleeps hollow if ever they got to close their eyes. The shortage in the supply of rice and the increase in an almost daily basis of fuel make anyone restless and sick—who wouldn’t be?

Observe how Filipinos today make up their homes. Metal grills surround every nook and cranny of every household, every inch of doors and windows are bounded with thick grills that could be easily mistaken for a prison house. Guard dogs roam the inner part of the yard. If ever you get pass a concrete fence you will easily notice the how ghastly those broken bottles and glass mounted and cemented atop the fence—making sure nobody would dare climb the wall no matter how short it is.

Ornamental plants are not for decorative purpose alone; plants with thick thorns and sturdy pointed leaves are sure to be placed in front of the house near the fence to discourage robbers and intruders to come near it. The ugly sight of barbed wires is not for military camps alone; they are a common household security material nowadays. It is as if the home owner hired a silent PR agency in the Philippines that frantically warns neighbors of the impending danger might befall on those who will think of getting near their fortress. Never mind the burglar alarm and the state of the art security measures—there is no safe home for those people with panic attacks.

The world is getting Agoraphobic, people are getting jumpy at the sight of the shadow in the dark, fears lurks everywhere—as a cocked gun readily aims at the door of constant danger people less and less trust one another. Who’s to blame? If watching the late night news makes you shiver to the bone and keeps you awake at night—then you might be suffering from anxiety and panic attacks.

That I think makes the majority of the population of the world gripped in apathy, indifference and a mad case of callousness. As we sleep comfortably numb behind the thick tall walls of our fortress, there will always be people who will try to rob us, and willing to kill and die for crumbs under our table unless the government address the real issue behind it—POVERTY.

The Chocolate Truth!

Some say chocolates are a health food or just a treat to us. Admit it. It is a pleasure for us when we are eating chocolates. In fact, others are craving for chocolates.

Anyway, some essential “truthful” information is found here:

The source of the chocolate is the seeds within the pods of the cacao tree. It is bitter. If you chew on a cacao bean, the taste is very bitter and not as tastefully appealing as expected of a sweet chocolate.

There is an antioxidant found in the cocoa solids. It is called “flavanols”. This is where the healthy claims of a chocolate come from. The more we eat a chocolate, the more flavanols we consume. It takes about four ounces, around four regular size of dark chocolate bars, eaten everyday to reduce blood pressure. Hey, and that is 500 calories and 42 grams of fat!

There are different ways to prepare a chocolate. And there are regulations to be followed as set by the government of what can be called a “chocolate”. It will entirely depend on its ratio of cocoa solids, cocoa butter, milk, and sugar. Different arrays of chocolates, from baking chocolate (no sugar added), to dark chocolate (limited sugar and plenty of cocoa solids) to milk chocolate (plenty of sugar, milk, and less cocoa solids), to “white chocolate” (my favorite, and is not considered a chocolate, because no cocoa solids can be found).

Chocolate is also considered a “carrier” of other nutrients. There are those chocolates which are calcium fortified, in milk and dark chocolate varieties. They provide half the daily calcium requirement plus Vitamin D. Plant chemicals (phytosterols) are also added to some chocolates to lower the cholesterol level of the chocolate product.

The end result is that enjoy a moderate serving of the chocolate. Simply don’t start eating chocolate as a supplement to a healthy diet. Better be conscious of the calorie count, and monitor chocolate proportions. Indulge reasonably. We don’t need to rationalize the treat for chocolates for the health benefits of a chocolate. Remember, even if flavanols are found in chocolates, they are also existing in other different foods, like grapes, apples, tea, among others.
